Sonnet for 2009

About 20 November 2009; remembering 25 September 1976
Just before Nathan’s birth, for Judy my daughter
I try to write a sonnet once again
For this new birth; now it seems many years
Since you were born, and I forget the pain,
Remember only joy. Seeing your fears
I feel so helpless, unable to help you:
Flesh of my flesh, inscrutably yourself
Inhabiting a world beyond my view,
The words inside your head bringing you wealth
That I can neither estimate nor judge;
So different your roads from those I trod,
Yet this in common: neither of us grudge
The woes, but go on searching for our God.
Most dear my daughter, dearest your small son
Nothing to fear, nothing is lost; much won.
