Wendie Shaffer

My grandparents escaped from Europe in the early 20th century. When they reached Vancouver, Canada, they stopped. And that’s where I was born, in the middle of WWII, and where I spent my first years. Glad to be born Canadian, as were both my parents. My parents named me Elaine, but I soon became Wendie with an "ie"!
My mother was a violinist, and that’s why the family emigrated to greater London, several years after the war. I had all my secondary schooling in south England —an education for which I am forever grateful.
When I was 27 years old, I moved to the Netherlands and here I have lived ever since, with months spent in other countries, or on board our boat Strømhella.
I trained as an English teacher (also teacher of English as a Foreign Language) which I enjoyed for many years. When my Dutch became good enough, I became a translator —and also learnt several other European languages —having an especial fondness for French, Italian and German.
My husband and I travelled extensively on our boat which we bought at the beginning of this century, and have explored many countries and discovered innumerable fascinating places and traditions.
In 2020 I suffered a severe stroke, and my life had to change.
I recovered, with renewed faith. Although I cannot exactly dance, any more, I go on.
I have always written (since I was about seven years old) and I hope you’ll enjoy reading these writings and finding meeting points.
