Wendie Shaffer
Life of E. Wendie Shaffer, so far…
Born in Vancouver, Canada, during the Second World War.
The sound of the sea, and mountains like the Rockies, always mean home for me.
Five years old: family moved to England; first home there staying with my mother’s aunt and uncle: the grandparents of Brian Daldorph (publishing poet).
Great family connection!
Studied English Language and Literature, and Education, at Oxford University, for four years.
Aged 27 went to live in the Netherlands and married a Dutchman, father of my son and daughter.
Taught English and Drama for many years.
Separated from first husband when children were aged four and two.
In the 1980s began translating, Dutch and some French, into English. For museums, books, articles etc. (See Google, Wendie Shaffer translator)
Since the age of eight have written — poems and prose, and never stopped.
With second husband spent ten years on live-aboard travelling round Mediterranean shores, looking and learning … Wrote Blog from 2011 until now, see: wendieswideworld.blogspot.com; contains some of my poems and accounts of the various countries we visited.
Now speak several European languages, always fascinated by words, continue to write, edit and translate.
See life continuing — have five grandchildren living in the Netherlands (so far).
Home in central Amsterdam — forever stimulating!
(B.t.w. To avoid confusion: there is apparently a Wendy Shaffer in the USA whom I would love to meet, with similar interests to mine — but we spell our “Wendie” differently!)
