Poems for Daniel, my small son

I groaned indeed; your father wept
Into this dangerous world then Daniel leapt
O little one, the joy and terror
Of seeing you at last
And knowing you alive
here in our house
Dear little one
The terror and the joy.
My rosebud my star my little lamb
Your smile outdazzles every joy I know
My hours are filled with wondering over you.
These deep grey winter days are sad no longer
For you lie here softly sleeping,
And for you all songs are new.
My moppet my joy
When I watch your small face
And when your tiny hand (unintentionally
I suppose) closes around my finger
I pray to an old forgotten God
Help me, help us all.
