For my love

though I should like to find a place, an open space
beyond the ultimate constraint
think perhaps that's crying for the moon
I meditate on breaking barriers
and loving you
and what I want to say, most dear
most still my love
is that I pressed my hand
against the wall
banged my stick upon the rock
and wine gushed forth
No barriers, not hard
but live and flowing
moments inexplicable, the open
the endless in the contained
UNFINISHED FOR ST VALENTINE'S DAY 1988
I only know the arrows and the bleeding hearts
ancient faceless deity
symbol of arbitrary passion
some whiff, some instinct - often camouflaged
desire for eternity, throbbing ecstasy
the lioness that suckles and the maid that milks
know the same poor passion
And nothing can diminish the coexisting chaos
when I love thee not
no harmony, no resolution
all jangled, out of tune and harsh
As easie might I from myselfe depart
as from my soule, which in thy breast doth lye:
that is my home of love
those lines that I before have writ doe lie
even those that said I coulde not love you dearer
It's all there the tearing and the burning
the insoluble
nevertheless
there are new tomorrows
and I can sleep and wake again
St Valentine and bleeding hearts
I will no longer gore my thoughts
Treasure no distant island
but look here: horizon in my room
