Poem for the world

Sadness

Sad world, but still daffodils dancing in the wind,
And every reason to rejoice (when looking close-up)
Because beautiful babies are born
Here, in this wealthy western hemisphere;
we do not see the homeless and the starving,
war does not screech across our streets
flattening buildings, flattening lives.
Care-less of all the pessimistic sounds; small buds gradually uncurl
And caterpillars creep softly along blades of green.
That’s in my world, and happy I can hold
Such images, remember and rejoice…
Not let the bombs and bulldozers triumph.
Tomorrow, the king’s birthday, some people will get drunk
Others withdraw into a green stillness;
While blackbirds scatter their triumphant notes
through the spring air.
We wait, not knowing exactly why or what for —
A word, more light, a resurrection,
While days spin into nights
And aubergines grow ripe
caterpillars transform into butterflies
babies learn to walk and maybe fly
