A dream

IT WAS DARK NIGHT
she knew she was dreaming
she was walking down a long narrow corridor
on either side she could feel the wall
smooth, like polished wood.
She walked on and on
it began to grow dreary
it led on for miles and miles
she thought it would cheer her to sing — but what?
Ah yes, she remembered the pilgrims’ song by John Bunyan.
the words were old-fashioned, but it was fun to sing:
she always liked the verse
Hobgoblins nor foul fiend can daunt her spirit
(she knew it was “his spirit” in the original,
but she made up her version).
On she marched, singing —
she knows she at the end, Shall life inherit
Not quite sure what this meant.
Then, ahead, she saw a glimmer of light
and then heard the sound of water
waves breaking on a distant shore
then birds singing
then sweet fragrances, roses and jasmine and
spicy scents of cinnamon
and finally she stepped out
into a new world
And woke up.
