What I learned in Greece

Let words reduce to bright simplicity
Away with frills (and furbelows, to boot!)
Ah -- but nostalgic longing for the wit
and the unusual, thinking of Donne, of Shakespeare
and of more, up to today’s friends...
the thrill of the unexpected
the splash and expanding circles of the pebble
thrown into the still pool...
keep some archaisms
Because -- looking around at all these
ageless marbles, slowly crumbling stones,
weathered grandeur:
We need these roots.

Otherwise, drift, mere seeds on the wind
to shores we never wanted, planned.
