Waiting for Whitsun

Sadness
Easy to imagine their fear
waiting in the dark
huddled behind locked doors
waiting for the harsh stamp of boots
and the hard banging from outside.
Easy to imagine the wet palms, the bated breath,
the relief when quiet returned.
Waiting in the fearful dark.
Some of them said they’d seen him
alive from the dead
had walked and talked with him
and broken bread.
But now, shivering in the dark
where, where was the comforter?
He had promised them, and he always kept his promises.
Waiting in the dark
Fearful and filled with hope.
