let them stand
trunks strong
branches lifting up, leaf covered
roots spreading down
into the polluted soil;
beautiful, majestic,
space-defining,
homes to nesting birds
offering shade and shelter;
so various in shape and colour.
Imagine how it would be
without them
like those Dutch paintings
of city canals —bare, no tree in sight,
the streets denuded.
Let us keep them,
cherish them,
listen to their rustling
watch their re-clothing each spring
their relinquishing splendour each fall;
let us help them to grow tall
