Smoke in the sky

Sadness
For my neighbour, who chose to die
Across the road from where I live
Police cars arrive, then an ambulance
they carry her body out of the house.
How deep grief grows, grooves
Through the mind, impossible
To ask for help, a hand to hold.
The years grew desolation in her
The ice at her heart froze out all singing
And all springs burnt bitter
At last she thought, It is enough
Lord now take away my spirit
For I am not better than my fathers
My hands hold nothing
My voice crackles in my throat
No words for partner, children, friends.
A smoke feather in the sky
And silence on the spring hillside.
