Singing through the night

a long dark cold night
shouting and screaming
each footstep forward slips — on blood.
We hold hands, and we sing
and we can feel each other’s warmth, and breath.
No thought of hunger —
just let us get through now, reach morning;
are we moving forwards —hard to tell;
have we been here before?
seems like it, sounds are familiar
but all is solid black.
Don’t let go, hold hands tight,
keep on singing, keep on moving;
we do not know where to —
cannot tell who, where, is the enemy.
Once, it seemed clear —
we could describe the claws, the horns,
knew the foul stench, and sound of mockery
even understood words misused
could peel away layers of fake and false.
But now we are befuddled
drugged and drunken, cannot distinguish
lost, little children, longing for light.
Wait — what were the words?
there lives the dearest freshness deep down things
something like that; now more good words fill the air:
What does the Lord require of you?
But to do justly, and to love mercy,
and to walk humbly with your God.
Now in the sky the first faint streaks of dawn.
Lift up your hearts: the Resurrection!
THE RESURRECTION!!
No dark can ever win.
Keep singing ...
