Poem for Daniel

on reaching the admirable age of 41...

Not that there were no lions ...there always were.
Prowling softly on padded feet, or growling in a rumbling kind of way.
But you knew it would not do
to take up arms
and plunge unseemly daggers in their hearts,
poison their meat,
creep up on them in sleep, and strangle them.
More subtle means were needed ...
So you built towers from which to watch their movements
(what matter if from plastic Lego blocks?)
practised swift numbing strokes of judo
and studied Words for Cunning Conversations,
like, ‘Dragon Lion, quo vadis?”
that would stump him!
But they did get a claw in edgewise
despite precautions ...

However, with age came wisdom.
You discovered the best way:
a tickle under the chin
a warm meal and then dreamful sleep.
See, you can walk around inside the den with them
talk with them, and they do not harm you.
Maybe they even smile a feline smile...
