For my husband

When asked his favourite colour, he paused, considered,
then said he didn’t know.
But when asked the square root of any random number
his eyes lit up, and small bells began to jingle in his head.
His mind — or should I say “brain” — is unknown territory for me;
pages of lengthy equations.
I cannot read it, however hard I try.
“We are little worlds, made cunningly of elements;”
He explores realms I never could access,
but we share meals and music, time and talks, together.
We have learned that a good poem should be short,
so I am drawing to a close…
There is much more to say,
but I know now to kill my darlings.
So, a last picture :
driving down the Californian coast, years ago,
we stopped for an evening meal.
A magnificent sunset flamed flamboyant
and dropped shining into the calm Pacific.
We watched in spellbound wonder,
each in our own world,
married by silence.
It was, and is, good.
