On a still Sunday morning
waking to grey quiet
I remember those days
when daybreak brought new desolation
I pulled the covers over my head
kept my eyes closed
only the distant voices of my children
roused a deep instinct to wake and go on
(a cherubim thou wast that didst preserve me)
not to succumb to death.
