Tangle of wisteria, lilac against a pale azure sky
dappled canopy of light…
across the way
rooftop tiles in terracotta angle upwards
reaching towards the skyline hills
offering viridian, chartreuse, lime,
and the greens of spruce and cypress.
Swallows swoop, black etchings,
a cuckoo repeats, repeats its message
tempting the gatto marmelato (marmalade cat)
and then the bells of the nearby campanile
sounding the hour
